Radio Show Up and Running

Tomorrow will be the first episiode of my new radio show `Fool`s Gold from Dimension ?".  The time slot I`ve been given is between 1 and 2:30 PM.  The first half hour of the show will be a showcase of new Canadian music; the last hour will be centred around a weekly theme.

If you`re interested, you can listen to it on 101.9 FM or online at http://cfuv.uvic.ca/listen/listen.html.

Tomorrow's show will be about Cambodian garage and psychedelic music from the late 60s to mid 70s.  Phnom Penh had an incredible scene during the later part of the Vietnam War. The City`s musicians  were inspired by the rock and roll they heard on American Armed Forces Radio.  They formed  groups which blended traditional melodies with rock rhythms and psycchedelic tones like fuzz guitar and Farfisa organ. Its really unique and beautiful stuff.

If any of you are interested in hearing some of these tunes, I`ve uploaded some of my favourite tracks by one of the key artists.

Here`s a video of a performance by So Savouen, one of the very few from the Cambodian scene to survive the Khmer Rouge genocide:

Digital Photo Editing Assignment.

I chose to try out Picnik and Splashup for my photo editing asssignmenr.  I was impressed with how user friendly and powerful Picink was.  Splashup was another story.  On, first inspection it appeared to be a nice online version of photo shop.  Using it turned out to be a nightmare.  I wasted a lot of time messing around with layers before running into a glitch when I tried to save my finished product.

Eventualy, I just switced back to Picnik and did the whole thing in under five minutes.  The only discernable difference between the two images is the font. Splashup seems to have more fonts available but that's pretty small consolation.

First Presentation

On Thursday I completed my first presentation of the program.  I can't say it was clear sailing exactly but at least there weren't any eggs or vegetables thrown.    In hindsight, I could have framed my exercise a little better and been a bit more confident with my delivery.  The exercise itself seemed sound and some classmates told me afterwards that they enjoyed it.  Hopefully, I'll get more comfortable with giving presentations as time goes on. Best of luck to everyone who's still to come, I've got your back.

A Beginning

Hi there and welcome to my secret island (ok, I guess its not so secret).  I’ll be using this site to give vent to some of the strange and wondrous notions which pop into my head as we progress through our course.  However, its likely (probable) that sometimes there won’t really be much doing in the idea department.   On these grey occasions, I’ll try to provide a link to something interesting I’ve come across on my journeys round the net.   I’ll do my best to keep these tidbits relevant to teaching in some way.

I should also mention that I’m a bit of a music nut and that I plan to apply the skills I’ve gained making this blog to the creation of another which will compliment a radio program I’ll be hosting on CFUV.  The show will be starting in October and is tentatively titled “Fool's Gold from Dimension ?”.  I’ll be sure to post a link to this other blog once its up and running.

I’m looking forward to keeping up with what you guys are thinking. Hopefully, you won’t think that what I write here will have been better off left on “the island”, so to speak.  Anyway, thanks for making it this far!
